What is ADHD coaching?
What is coaching? Glad you asked, I will keep this brief, because I too have ADHD 🙃 In the section afterwards I explain in more detail, so for those who find that helpful, continue reading along.
Coaching is a conversation about what is important to you, the change you want, and how to make it happen. It is goal directed. I partner with you to address the “what”, the “when” and the “how” so that you can make your wants a reality in a way that works best for you and how you learn and process information. ADHD coaching is coaching done from the lens of a deep understanding, knowledge, and up to date scientifically backed research on the unique needs of folks with ADHD.
How is coaching different than therapy? Therapists have specialized training to uncover the “why”, the patterns or history that may inhibit change, whereas coaches remain present and future focussed. Coaching, therapy, professional medical advice, and social supports are all great tools for creating and maintaining positive change.
My area of interest and focus in coaching is supporting neurodivergent folks (adults and young adults). All coaching involves skill/strategy building. Change can be challenging, but it is worth it.
creating and maintaining the best environment for a ADHD friendly lifestyle
ADHD in the workplace and its impact on relationships, productivity, and job satisfaction
Conflict and communication in ADHD relationships (partnerships, parenting, friendships, career)
Women with a late ADHD diagnosis
Neurodivergent adults and young adults navigating university/college
Parenting neurodivergent youth
I personally find that people come to neurodiversity coaching when they recognize that something is inhibiting them in their life, they want to understand themselves more, they realize that doing everything alone is not working for them, and they are motivated to take steps towards change. This must come from the individual, being forced into coaching is not supportive.
In other words, the “middle part” of someone’s ADHD/AuDHD/ Neurodiversity journey is a common time people reach out for coaching. Many people continue coaching or come back to coaching to maintain structure and accountability.
What does one-on-one coaching look/ feel like?
the client does most of the talking, the coach asks powerful questions to bring forward new awareness
moments of silence are common, as folks work through their thoughts and feelings
strong emotions sometimes arise, tears are not uncommon.
the space should feel emotionally safe and supported
might feel uncomfortable at times because change is challenging. Part of growth is breaking through what is holding you back. It would be misguided to say that being coached feels easy.
Can’t I just ask myself coaching questions?
Yes, of course you can, and that can be a healthy habit to keep building self awareness. But, it can also be a little bit like tickling oneself, the effect is just not the same as being coached live by another human.
A good coach:
challenges their client in their current way of thinking and/or any limiting beliefs they may be holding onto
supports their client in creating actionable steps towards their goal directed change
is comfortable working with strong emotions
does not tell the client what to do, and does not give advice
helps clients see their situation from a different lens and asks questions that support problem solving in a way that works for their client’s individual needs at that time
maintains confidentiality and ethics
understands the difference between what is coaching and what is therapy
recommends additional resources/supports that could be helpful for their client when/if needed
Who is neurodiversity coaching good for?
For people who recognize that things feel harder than they should, and feel ready to take action towards change.
Those who want support and to no longer “go it alone”
Those wanting to gain new insights into what might be possible
It is common for folks who have done some work in therapy or are currently in therapy to also have coaching. Both supports can work well hand in hand.
People who want to add some accountability, consistency, and structure to their lives.
