A safe place to challenge yourself.
You can’t expect things to change in your life unless you make a move to do things differently. Having ADHD is a challenge without a doubt. I see it first hand and I live it as well. When a day is extra hard (sometimes there are many!) I acknowledge this and try to be gentle with myself. I have learned from Kristen Neff’s self compassion training to remind myself that no one is perfect, we are all human. I literally have a mantra written on a small paper (pdf link here) that I keep in my card holder, bathroom drawer, and office desk and re-read when I need it. Truth! I just can’t predict when I might need those words. They help. I honestly am always working on managing my ADHD, it isn’t always easy. This helps to re-set me. At the same time I try to maintain an equilibrium in regards to my attitude towards my ADHD. I am not a victim and I will resist that mentality.
I am always working on finding that sweet balance of challenging myself in my growth and being kind to myself as I skill build (always and forever). I keep at the forefront of my decision making the phrase “ADHD is an explanation, not an excuse”. It is a very slippery slope to slide into the behaviour of not taking accountability for how our actions impact both ourselves and others. That is why I am strict with you all about no shows for events. Communication is key! This is one of the reasons why being around other supportive, positive people and therapy are so helpful, they challenge us in our thinking and as a result we push ourselves towards change that is good for us!
At the adhd SOCIAL HUB we are all working on living our best lives with ADHD. This is a safe space to practice new skills, to gain self awareness and even ask others for gentle feedback. Just by attending a group event, even if you don’t say a word, you will be positively impacted and motivated by others around you.
The values of the adhd SOCIAL HUB are safety, kindness, and support. When we have all three, we end up with the perfect environment for growth.
